If you have a concrete pour booked in Redding for Sunday, August 16, move it. The inaugural Ironman 70.3 Northern California shuts down or restricts enough of the road network that a ready-mix truck cannot reliably reach most job sites that morning.
This is not a case of adding fifteen minutes to a route. Concrete runs on a clock that starts the moment water hits cement at the batch plant.
What Caltrans Says Is Actually Closing
Caltrans is asking drivers to avoid large portions of Shasta County and the City of Redding on race morning. According to KRCR's race day guide to Ironman 70.3 Redding, delays generally begin before 7 a.m. and run until roughly 1 p.m.
| Location | Impact | Window |
|---|---|---|
| SR 299, Oak Bottom to Rock Creek Road | One way traffic control, delays up to one hour | 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. |
| Interstate 5 and Oasis Road | Delays up to 20 minutes | 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. |
| Airport Road overcrossing at SR 44 | Closed to southbound traffic | 7:30 a.m. to noon |
Beyond the state highways, sections of Keswick Dam Road, Iron Mountain Road, Bear Mountain Road, Dry Creek Road, Old Alturas Road, Oasis Road, Cypress Avenue, and Park Marina Drive are on the closure list. That is a wide net across the north and east sides of town.
Why a Detour Is Worse for Concrete Than for a Pickup Truck
Ready-mix has a working window measured in roughly 90 minutes from batching, and August in the north valley shortens it further. Heat and low humidity accelerate the set.
A truck stuck behind one way control on SR 299 for an hour arrives with concrete that is stiffening in the drum. Adding water on site to make it placeable weakens the finished slab, which is a defect you live with for the next thirty years.
There is also the finishing crew to consider. A pour is a relay, and if the second and third trucks arrive out of sequence you get cold joints where none were designed.
What to Do If Your Project Falls on That Weekend
Most contractors in Shasta County already have Sunday blocked out. The bigger risk is Saturday work and Monday morning starts, where crews and material still have to cross town.
- Saturday, August 15 also has kids races at the Redding Civic Auditorium starting at 9 a.m., plus athlete check in through 4 p.m., so downtown access tightens.
- If your site is off Old Alturas, Airport Road, or anywhere near Park Marina, expect access trouble both days.
- Demolition and haul off are just as affected. Roll off trucks running old slab removal and disposal need the same routes the race is using.
- Push the pour to the following week and use the weekend for prep instead. Forming, grading, and rebar placement do not need a batch plant.
That last point is worth taking seriously. Base preparation is the single largest predictor of how a slab performs in our soils, and it is the step that gets rushed when everyone is watching the concrete truck's clock.
The Run Course Is a Free Lesson in Flatwork
The race finishes with a run along the Sacramento River Trail and through the Sundial Bridge area. If you walk that stretch, you are looking at decades of public concrete that has been rained on, baked, root heaved, and pounded by foot traffic.
Pay attention to where it has failed. You will see the same three things almost every time.
Control joints that were cut too shallow
Concrete cracks. The only question is whether it cracks where you told it to. A joint cut to a quarter of slab depth within the first day gives the crack somewhere to go, and that principle applies to a residential driveway slab exactly as it does to a public trail.
Edges that lost their support
Where soil erodes out from under a slab edge, the concrete becomes a cantilever and snaps. Good walkway and path construction accounts for drainage before anyone talks about finish texture.
Root intrusion nobody planned for
Redding has mature oaks and the roots go where the water is. Panels lifted an inch or more are usually a tree problem, not a concrete problem, and grinding the trip hazard down only buys a couple of seasons.
If your own slab is showing any of those symptoms, a targeted repair assessment will tell you whether the panel can be saved or whether the base under it has already failed.
Book Around the Closures, Not Through Them
Race day is one Sunday. Losing a slab to a mistimed pour is permanent.
We schedule Redding, Shasta Lake, Anderson, and Red Bluff work around known road impacts, and the week after the race is wide open for driveways, backyard patio slabs, and repair work. Tell us your site address and target date and we will confirm whether truck access is realistic before anything gets ordered.
