Pouring concrete in the North State

Redding's Sacramento Valley climate is one of the hardest in California for concrete. Summer highs regularly top 110°F, surface temps on fresh concrete can hit 140°F, and low humidity flash-dries finishes in minutes. We follow ACI 305 hot-weather protocols on every summer pour: chilled mix water, evaporation retarders, early-morning starts, and curing compound applied within minutes of finishing. Generic specs fail here, ours don't.

Concrete Problems We Fix

What types of concrete problems do we fix in Redding?

The Sacramento Valley climate is unusually hard on concrete. Below are the four failure patterns we see most often in Shasta County, and what we do about each one.

Heat cracking & thermal expansion

When ambient temps hit 100°F+, concrete surface temps can reach 140°F. Without proper joint spacing and curing, thermal expansion drives cracks wider than 1/4 inch within the first summer. We diagnose with a crack map, then either route-and-seal minor cracks, apply a polymer-modified overlay, or replace the slab with properly jointed new concrete and full curing compound.

Internal data: 42% of repair calls trace to inadequate joint spacing or curing.

Settling & sinking from clay soils

Shasta County's expansive clay soils swell with winter rains and shrink in summer drought, creating a cycle that undermines slabs. We see 2- to 3-inch drops on driveways and garage slabs that were poured on poorly compacted fill. We lift with high-density polyurethane foam, typically 60–80% cheaper than tear-out, and void-fill underneath so it doesn't sink again.

Industry data: polyurethane slab-jacking costs ~30% of full replacement.

UV damage & surface degradation

Redding averages 269 sunny days per year. Unsealed concrete fades, chalks, and develops surface crazing from UV and heat cycling. Stamped and colored concrete suffers most. We grind the damaged surface, apply a polymer-modified overlay or micro-topping, and seal with a UV-stable penetrating sealer that resists discoloration. Done right, the repair outlasts the original.

NOAA: 269 avg sunny days per year, Shasta County.

Tree root heaving & trip hazards

Valley oaks and other mature trees can lift sidewalks and driveways 2+ inches. California law holds property owners liable for trip hazards on public-facing walkways. We either grind the offset down (cheapest), mudjack the low side to meet the high side, or sawcut and replace the affected panel. Root barriers prevent recurrence.

California Civil Code §846: property owner liability for maintained walkways.
Concrete We Install

What types of concrete services do we offer?

We handle the full residential and light-commercial concrete spectrum. Here are the project categories we pour most often in Redding.

Residential driveways

Standard residential driveways in Redding are 4 inches of 3,500–4,000 PSI concrete on 4–6 inches of compacted Class 2 aggregate base. RV pads, truck driveways, and any slab over 600 square feet get 5–6 inches with #4 rebar at 18" on center. In our heat, proper curing is the single biggest factor in slab longevity, every driveway gets curing compound applied within minutes of finishing.

PCA: 30+ year service life when properly cured and jointed.

Outdoor patios & living spaces

Redding's climate makes outdoor living a year-round reality. Standard broom finish runs roughly $6–$10 per square foot installed; exposed aggregate $8–$13; stamped and colored $12–$20. We always include a 1/8" per foot slope away from the house, fiber-reinforced mix, and control joints at no more than 10 feet apart, the three details that prevent cracking in our heat.

Internal: 38% of 2024 pours were residential patios and pool decks.

Pool decks & outdoor surfaces

Pool decks are one of our fastest-growing services. We pour slip-resistant, heat-reflective surfaces that stay comfortable barefoot even in July. Options include cool-deck coatings, light-colored stamped patterns, and textured broom finishes. Every pool deck gets proper drainage slope away from the pool, expansion joints at the coping, and a UV-stable sealer.

Internal: pool deck inquiries up 35% year-over-year in Shasta County.

Foundations & structural slabs

For new builds, additions, and detached garages we pour footings, stem walls, and slab-on-grade per California Building Code. Minimum frost depth here is 12 inches, much shallower than mountain areas. Footings go a minimum of 8" thick by 16" wide for residential. We coordinate with framers, plumbers, and inspectors so the slab is right the first time. Seismic requirements per CBC are standard on every foundation pour.

California Building Code: 12" frost depth, seismic Zone D requirements.

"They tore out our cracked 1990s driveway, fixed the base properly, and poured a reinforced slab in two days. Two summers of 110° heat and not a single crack. Worth every penny."

"Got three quotes for a stamped patio. They were the only ones who walked the yard, explained drainage, and put it in writing. Came in $400 under their quote. Patio looks incredible."

"Our pool deck was cracking and burning our feet every summer. They poured a new cool-deck surface that stays comfortable even in July. The kids actually use the pool now without shoes."

About Us

Locally owned, in the North State since 2008

We started with a single mixer truck and a two-man crew in 2008, pouring driveways for friends on the west side of Redding. Seventeen years later we run four crews, pour roughly 80,000 square feet a year, and have built a reputation by doing two things well, answering the phone fast and never cutting the mix.

Every estimate is walked by an owner. Every pour is supervised by a finisher with at least 10 years on the trowel. And every callback gets returned, even years later, because the only way to last 17 years in this trade is to stand behind the work.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time of year to pour concrete in Redding?

March through May and September through November are ideal. Summer temperatures in Redding regularly exceed 100°F, which causes concrete to set too fast, lose moisture, and crack. We can pour in summer using early-morning starts, evaporation retarders, and ice water in the mix, but spring and fall produce the best results at the lowest cost.

How thick should a concrete driveway be in Redding?

Standard residential driveways should be 4 inches of 3,500 to 4,000 PSI concrete over compacted base. For driveways that see RVs, trucks, or heavy trailers we recommend 5 to 6 inches with rebar or fiber reinforcement. Redding's expansive clay soils and extreme heat make properly compacted base and curing especially important.

How does Redding's heat affect concrete curing?

High temperatures accelerate setting and cause rapid moisture loss, which leads to surface cracking and reduced strength. We follow ACI 305 hot-weather practices on every summer pour: chilled mix water, evaporation retarders, curing compounds applied within minutes of finishing, and shade structures when needed. Concrete poured above 90°F without these precautions can lose 10 to 15 percent of its design strength.

Do you charge for estimates?

No. Every on-site estimate is free, and there is no hidden fee. We respond to estimate requests within 2 business hours.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. We hold a California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) C-8 concrete license, carry general liability insurance and workers' compensation coverage on every crew member. We provide certificates of insurance on request before any project begins.

How long does stamped concrete last in Redding?

Properly installed and sealed stamped concrete lasts 25 to 30 years in Redding. The biggest enemies here are UV exposure and heat, not freeze-thaw like colder climates. Re-sealing every 2 to 3 years protects the color and surface from our intense sun. We use UV-stable acrylic sealers on every stamped job.

Will you remove and replace old concrete, or just pour new?

We do both. Concrete removal, sawcutting, demolition, base prep, and haul-off is one of our core services and is typically included in any replacement quote. We also do removal-only jobs if you are working with another trade.
