A properly built concrete driveway lasts 30 to 50 years. Poured on a weak base or neglected for a decade, the same slab can start failing in 15.
The difference is rarely the concrete itself. It comes down to what was underneath it, how the joints were cut, and whether anyone sealed it after year one.
What the 30 to 50 Year Range Actually Depends On
Concrete gains strength for years after it cures. A slab that survives its first decade without structural cracking will usually go the distance.
Four things decide which end of the range you land on.
Base preparation
This is the single biggest factor. Compacted aggregate base spreads vehicle loads evenly and keeps water from pooling under the slab.
Concrete poured straight onto native soil will crack no matter how good the mix was. Much of Shasta County has clay-heavy soil that swells and shrinks with the seasons, which makes proper base depth non-negotiable here.
Slab thickness and reinforcement
Four inches is standard for passenger vehicles. Five or six inches with rebar is what you want if an RV, boat trailer, or work truck lives on it.
Plenty of driveways around Redding get parked on by vehicles they were never designed to carry. That is a common source of early cracking.
Drainage
Water is the enemy of every slab. If runoff sits against the edges or washes out the base, the concrete loses its support and cracks.
Grade should carry water away from the slab and away from the house.
Maintenance
The cheapest part of the list and the one most often skipped. Sealing and joint upkeep cost very little compared to a replacement.

Decorative surfaces need a little more attention. If you are weighing a patterned or colored finish, budget for resealing on a tighter schedule to keep the color from fading.
How the Northern California Climate Affects Concrete
Redding gets a specific kind of punishment. Long stretches of triple digit heat in summer, then concentrated rainfall from November through March.
Heat matters most on pour day. Concrete placed in 105 degree weather loses water fast, which can leave a weak, dusty surface layer if the crew does not adjust the mix and cure it properly.
The wet season is the long term threat. Repeated saturation and drying moves the soil under the slab, and any water that gets into a crack accelerates it.
Freeze and thaw damage is minor at valley elevations. At higher elevations in Shasta County it becomes a real consideration, and sealing matters more there.
Sealing Cadence
Seal a new driveway once the concrete has cured, usually around 30 days after the pour. After that, reseal every two to three years.
Adjust based on exposure. A driveway in full afternoon sun with no shade will need it closer to every two years.

Spring and fall are the practical windows for sealing here. Summer surface temperatures make most sealers cure too quickly to bond well.
Joint Maintenance Is What Most People Skip
Control joints are the grooves cut into the slab. They exist to give concrete a planned place to crack as it expands and contracts, instead of a random one.
When those joints fill with dirt and weeds, they stop working. Debris packs in tight, prevents the slab from moving, and the pressure forces a crack somewhere else.
Once a year, clean the joints out and refill them with a flexible polyurethane caulk. It is an afternoon of work that protects a slab worth thousands.
Do the same for the expansion joint where the driveway meets the garage slab or sidewalk. That seam is where water most often gets underneath.
Handle Small Damage Before It Spreads
A hairline crack is cosmetic. The same crack after three winters of water infiltration and soil movement is structural.
Seal cracks wider than about an eighth of an inch. Watch for a lip forming between the two sides, which means the slab is settling and the base underneath has moved.
Surface spalling, where the top layer flakes off, often traces back to a poor pour or deicing salt. Catching it early usually means a resurfacing job rather than a crack and spall repair turning into a full tear out.
Once cracking is widespread and the slab has broken into shifting sections, repair stops being economical. At that point taking the old slab out and starting with a proper base is the better spend.

Keep heavy equipment off the edges. The perimeter of a slab is unsupported on one side and cracks under load far sooner than the middle.
When Longevity Starts at the Pour
Everything above assumes the slab was built right. Maintenance extends a good driveway; it cannot rescue a bad one.
