How Long Each One Lasts
A slab poured on properly compacted base lasts 30 to 40 years in this climate. Control joints and steel or fiber reinforcement do most of that work by telling the concrete where to crack instead of letting it decide.
The pavers themselves often outlive a slab, since fired or pressed units are dense and hard to break. Their weak point is the bedding sand and joint sand holding everything in place.
In Shasta County that base moves. Summer irrigation, winter runoff, and gopher and ant activity all migrate sand, so paver patios commonly develop rocking units and uneven edges within 10 to 15 years unless someone re-sands and re-levels them.
Repairs: Where Pavers Pull Ahead
Pavers win this category outright. Pull the damaged units, correct the base beneath them, reset the pieces, and the patio looks untouched.
Concrete repairs always show to some degree. A crack can be routed and filled, ground flush, or covered with an overlay, but matching the color and texture of a weathered slab is difficult.
Frequency matters more than difficulty, though. A well built slab may never need work, while a paver field needs periodic attention as a normal part of ownership.
